How Star Wars Taught Me to Be A Leader
Star Wars is an epic space opera multi-media franchise that has become a worldwide pop culture phenomenon because it’s entertaining and it’s rooted in power.
In the Star Wars universe, a mystical power known as the Force resides in all living things and binds the galaxy together; however, only some individuals are able to wield it. These force wielders are culturally diverse but they are often depicted within the major traditions of the Jedi, who seek harmony, inner tranquility, and self-control, and the Sith, who use their powers without restraint for personal gain. The conflict between the Jedi and the Sith serves as a plot device in almost every Star Wars story.
What I love most about Star Wars is that it teaches moral philosophy, political philosophy, and leadership through storytelling. Three characters that have greatly influenced my perspective on leadership are Padme Amidala, Ahsoka Tano, and Mon Mothma. Each character wields their power and privilege to help others and speak truth to power at great risk to their own life and livelihood. A prominent example is Mon Montha’s speech about truth.
Which has me thinking about our latest initiative at PointNorth, Live Your North.
I, like my PointNorth colleagues, think Leadership (is a Verb) because it is action-oriented. Who has power, why, and what they choose to do with it is important to understand. While the truth may set us free, we must first do the work. Therefore, it is on each of us to be critical and humble so that our power doesn’t corrupt and we don’t become our own enemy through self-righteousness (Jedi) or personal aggrandizement (Sith).
Leadership isn’t just about positionality and power.
It is about how you show up. It’s about kindness, integrity, courage, and everyday action. To Live Your North means to center yourself on what your true north is and ensuring you are aligned with your values. My leadership is rooted in my values of integrity, belonging, passion, and balance. These four core values inform my work, decision-making, and interactions with colleagues every day. Do you know what you stand for? We have a wonderful Values Sort to help you get started.
By wearing a hoodie or rather letting your “North” flag fly, you’re sending a message: I lead with my values and I hold space for others. Join us in building a more just and humane world.
